Brussels (Belgium)– President of the Republic, SG of the Frente POLISARIO, H.E. Brahim Gali, stressed in his remarks before the 6th EU-AU Summit in Brussels last Thursday, that “EU must be part of the solution to Western Sahara conflict and not part of the problem”.

He assured to the participating European and African Heads of State and Government that “it is time for EU to accompany AU in a constant and serious way to find a definitive solution to this conflict”.

Giving these remarks during the works of the EU-AU Summit’s session dedicated to Peace and Security, President Gali “called on Europe to play a positive role in the search for a solution and to relinquish its position as part of the problem, contributing to strengthening the conditions for peace, security, and stability in the region of North Africa and the Sahel”.

He underlined that “for a lasting peace in Western Sahara, it is necessary to prevent the escalation of tensions in this conflict that has lasted more than forty-five years, especially taking into account the situation that has prevailed since November 13, 2020, which will only be possible through the implementation of a just solution, based on respect for international legality and the principle of decolonization.”

On another hand, the Saharawi President also gave a statement during the discussion of the Covid-19 issue on Friday, expressing full support to the AU vision on the matter.

He stressed that including the theme of Health in the Summit resumes the need to face shortages and challenges in education, infrastructure, technology, and knowledge sharing that should characterize the relationship between the two continents, starting with joined effort to face Covid-19.

It should be recalled that the EU-AU Summit took place last Thursday and Friday, 17 and 18 February 2022 in the European Capital, Brussels, with the participation of Heads of State and Government from African and European Unions.

Led by President Ghali, the Saharawi delegation was composed of Representative for Europe and the European Union, Ambassador Oubi Bouchraya Bashir, Permanent Representative to AU, Amb. Lamine Baalai, Mrs. Khadijetou Mukhtar, Deputy representative in Spain, and Mr. Basir Labsir, First Secretary in Saharawi Representation in Brussels.
