JOHANNESBURG – Morocco has failed miserably in its attempt to cancel the participation of the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) in the Brics/Africa meeting, due to take place on 24 August in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Indeed, the Moroccan side has made efforts to convince certain members of the group to oppose the participation of the SADR in this meeting (notably India and Brazil).

Nevertheless, despite all its manoeuvres, the Kingdom of Morocco was unable to achieve its objectives and suffered a humiliating defeat, given that BRICS decisions are taken unanimously.

To disguise its failure, Morocco published information through its official agency quoting “an authorised source” who claimed that “the meeting was organised on the basis of a unilateral initiative by the South African government”.

It should be noted that the BRICS-Africa summit will be held with the participation of the Saharawi president.

Work on the 15th session of the BRICS summit began on Tuesday in Johannesburg, South Africa, and will continue until the 24th of the same month.

Formally launched in 2009, the group of five emerging powers now accounts for 23% of global GDP and 42% of the world’s population.
