Africa, a rising centre of influence, says Russian Ambassador Andrey Kemarskiy at National Day Event

GABORONE – The Russian Ambassador to Botswana, H.E. Andrey Kemarskiy, reaffirmed his country’s commitment to deepening diplomatic, economic, and educational ties with Botswana during the Russia Day celebrations on June 12.

Speaking at a reception in Gaborone, Ambassador Kemarskiy emphasized Russia’s historical resilience, its role in shaping a multipolar global order, and its expanding partnerships across Africa. He described Russia’s transformation into “a sovereign and confident state” engaged in global peace efforts while standing firm on its national interests.

The ambassador underscored Russia’s stance on the Ukraine conflict, stating that attempts to strategically undermine Russia were “destined to fail,” while reaffirming his country’s openness to diplomatic solutions. He noted Russia’s engagement with African leaders in peace initiatives, citing ongoing efforts to promote negotiations.

On Russia-Africa relations, Kemarskiy described Africa as a “rising centre of influence,” highlighting economic cooperation in sectors such as energy, food security, and digital infrastructure. He stressed Russia’s support for Africa’s bid for greater representation in global decision-making, including a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

The country’s eminent legal minds were also in attendance: Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Nelson Ramaotwana flanked by Chief Justice Gaolapelwe Ketlogetswe and Justice Lot Moroka of the Court of Appeal

Kemarskiy also praised Botswana’s diplomatic efforts within international forums and celebrated the 55-year milestone of Russian-Botswana relations. He acknowledged Botswana’s role in regional peace initiatives and noted deepening collaboration in legal, educational, and scientific fields.

Meanwhile, Botswana has also reaffirmed its enduring diplomatic relationship with Russia, celebrating more than five decades of collaboration between the two nations.

Speaking at the 35th Anniversary of Russia Day reception, Acting Minister for International Relations Moeti Caesar Mohwasa commended Russia for its contributions to Botswana’s development in sectors such as education, military, and engineering.

Mohwasa expressed gratitude for Russia’s ongoing capacity-building initiatives, including scholarships that enable Batswana students to pursue studies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) at reputable institutions abroad.

The minister highlighted a newly announced Diplomatic Training Course set to take place in Moscow next year, further solidifying educational ties between the nations.

Beyond bilateral relations, Mohwasa underscored Botswana’s commitment to multilateralism and global peace. He acknowledged Russia’s historical role in supporting African nations during anti-colonial struggles while urging closer cooperation to address modern global challenges such as unemployment, climate change, and international security.

Addressing geopolitical tensions, Mohwasa voiced Botswana’s concern over the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. He called for both countries to embrace diplomatic dialogue and work towards a peaceful resolution, reiterating Botswana’s readiness to collaborate with international stakeholders in seeking a viable solution.

Mohwasa extended warm congratulations to the Russian Federation on its National Day and reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to strengthening its long-standing friendship with Russia for the prosperity of both nations.
