The Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Lesotho, Hon. Ts’epang Matlhohonolofatso Ts’ita‑Mosena, has urged Basotho to embrace condom use as a responsible and caring choice to protect loved ones from HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies.

Speaking in Sesotho in a video message to mark International Condoms Day, commemorated on 13 February 2026 ahead of Valentine’s Day, Hon. Mosena framed condom use as an expression of love, respect and shared responsibility between partners.

The message forms part of advocacy efforts supported by AHF Health Champions to normalise open conversations around sexual and reproductive health.

Moving beyond the traditional HIV prevention framework of ABC (Abstain, Be Faithful, Condomise), the Deputy Speaker introduced an expanded ABCDE approach that reflects current realities.

She encouraged citizens to abstain where possible, be faithful to one partner, use condoms consistently and correctly, adhere to prescribed treatment, and undergo routine health examinations.

Hon. Mosena emphasised that prevention works best when communities take proactive steps to protect their health. She argued that condom use should not be stigmatised but recognised as a practical tool for safeguarding families and futures.

SADC Parliamentary Forum Secretary General Ms Boemo Sekgoma commended the Deputy Speaker for her leadership and said her message, delivered in the local vernacular is an example of leadership “from the front” and reinforces the role of public leaders in promoting informed, responsible and culturally grounded health choices.
