The Republic of Botswana and the Republic of Equatorial Guinea have established diplomatic relations, marking a significant step in Botswana’s efforts to expand its international partnerships and strengthen engagement with fellow African states.

The two countries formalised the relationship on 19th August 2026 through the signing of a Joint Communiqué in New York. The agreement was signed by Mr. Charles Masole, Permanent Representative of Botswana to the United Nations, and Mr. Anatolio Ndong Mba, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea to the United Nations.

The establishment of diplomatic relations reflects the two countries’ commitment to fostering mutual understanding, friendship and cooperation. The relationship will be guided by the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter and international law, including respect for sovereign equality, independence and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.

The development provides a formal framework for Botswana and Equatorial Guinea to strengthen bilateral engagement and explore areas of mutual interest. It also creates opportunities for greater political, economic and social cooperation, as well as closer collaboration within multilateral institutions.

For Botswana, the establishment of relations with Equatorial Guinea represents another opportunity to broaden its diplomatic network and advance its national interests through constructive engagement. Stronger ties with African states can also contribute to greater cooperation on shared continental priorities and strengthen Botswana’s participation in regional and international affairs.

The new diplomatic relationship further demonstrates Botswana’s continued commitment to regional cooperation, multilateral diplomacy and stronger partnerships across Africa.

As the two countries begin to develop their relationship, the establishment of formal diplomatic ties provides a foundation for future cooperation and closer people-to-people and institutional engagement between Botswana and Equatorial Guinea.
