Botswana and the Principality of Andorra have established diplomatic relations, marking a new chapter in the two countries’ international engagement.

The agreement was formalised on 26th August 2026 in New York through the signing of a Joint Communiqué by Botswana’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Mr. Charles Masole, and Andorra’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Mr. Joan Forner Rovira.

The two countries said the establishment of diplomatic relations reflects their commitment to promoting mutual understanding, friendship and cooperation in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.

These principles include respect for sovereign equality and independence, the promotion of international peace and security, and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.

For Botswana, the partnership provides an opportunity to broaden its diplomatic network and advance its national interests through greater international cooperation. It also creates a formal framework for strengthening bilateral and multilateral engagement with Andorra in areas of mutual interest.

At a global level, the significance of the relationship may extend beyond bilateral cooperation. Establishing ties with Andorra adds another partner to Botswana’s diplomatic network and could strengthen its ability to build coalitions and advance its interests within multilateral institutions, particulary the United Nations.

The new relationship could further open opportunities for the two countries to exchange perspectives and explore cooperation in areas of mutual interest, including sustainable development and other issues on the international agenda.

The development also speaks to Botswana’s broader ambitions under Vision 2036, particularly its focus on Pillar 3: Sustainable Environment and Pillar 4: Governance, Peace and Security and strengthening Botswana’s position in the international community. By expanding its diplomatic partnerships, Botswana can create additional platforms for cooperation while advancing its national interests and contributing to global efforts.

The establishment of diplomatic ties is therefore another step in Botswana’s efforts to diversify its international partnerships and strengthen its diplomatic presence globally.
