The 9th of August marks a new beginning and consolidation of bilateral relations between the Republic of Botswana and the Republic of Algeria as His Excellency Mr. Mourad Adjabi, presented his Letters of Credence to His Excellency Dr. Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi, President of Botswana, as the first ever Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of Algeria to Botswana.

President Masisi welcomed the Algerian Ambassador stressing the historical ties that link the two countries, and recalling the support Botswana received decades back during the period of Apartheid regime occupation and oppression in the region surrounding the country, when he said Algeria sent oil supplies in support to Botswana while in need as well as providing support in the Building of the University of Botswana library, which is now considered as one of the best in Africa.

President Masisi stressed also how the two countries had always supported liberation struggles in the continent, in accordance with the doctrine and values of the OAU/AU, stressing especially the two countries principled support to the Saharawi struggle for freedom.

He further emphasized Botswana’s willingness to strengthen bilateral relations at all levels and to exchange on crucial fields where Algeria has sound expertise.

“Both our countries are in a hurry to reach high income status… Our solutions on reaching a higher levels of development could be found in our cooperation, and how to exploit to the maximum our natural resources; value chain addition,” President Masisi said.

It should be recalled that the Republic of Algeria had had a liaison office in Botswana for almost one decade. It upgraded its mission to the level of an Embassy this year, and appointed H.E. Mr. Mourad Adjabi, as its first Ambassador to the country.

Mr. Adjabi has a remarkable background as he was Algeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Türkiye from September 2019 to October 2021. He was also President of the National Committee for the Prevention and fight against trafficking in persons from 2018 to 2019, to mention only these recent posts.
