The University of Botswana has recorded “significant strides” in the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

According to UB’s Director of Public Affairs, Dr Faith Rapuleng-Tuelo, it is an honour for the University of Botswana (UB) to be included in these prestigious rankings as it highlights the University’s growing impact and visibility on the global stage therefore corroborating the University’s vision.

Out of over 29, 000 universities established worldwide, only 2092 achieved ranking status by the Times Higher Education. UB was ranked within the 1201-1500th range globally.

“This achievement is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our academic institution, faculty, support staff and students. A significant highlight of UB’s performance in the Times Higher Education 2025 rankings is the recognition of the international quality of our academic subjects”, Dr Rapuleng-Tuelo added.

The Times ranks universities in eleven (11) broad subject categories, and UB has gained global recognition in five (5) of these.

  • Clinical and Health: UB has achieved continued recognition in this category, maintaining its position in the 501-600 band, underscoring our commitment to advancing medical and health sciences education and research.
  • Physical Sciences: UB’s consistent ranking in this field, remaining in the 1001+ band, this highlights the strength of its programmes and research in physical sciences.
  • Social Sciences: UB’s ongoing recognition in the social sciences, ranked in the 801-1000 band, reflects the quality and impact of its academic programmes and research.
  • Life Sciences: Newly recognised in this category, UB has demonstrated significant progress and achievements in life sciences education and research, securing a position in the 601-800 band.
  • Business and Economics: First-time recognition for UB in this category, ranked in the 801+ band, demonstrating the quality of UB’s business and economics programmes and the impactful research conducted by its faculty.

According to Dr Rapuleng-Tuelo, this is a remarkable accomplishment considering the competitive nature of the World University Rankings by the Times Higher Education, which evaluates thousands of institutions worldwide.

Moreover, she said the recognition serves as a foundation upon which UB can build. It opens up opportunities for international collaborations, attracts global talent, and enhances the overall educational experience for the institution’s students.

“As we continue to invest in research, innovation, and quality education, we can look forward to even more outstanding achievements in the future. Let’s celebrate this milestone and continue supporting the University of Botswana’s journey towards excellence”, she said.

The University of Botswana is a leading institution of higher learning in Botswana, committed to providing quality education, research, and service to the nation and beyond. The University seeks to improve economic and social conditions for advancing itself as a distinctively African university with regional and international outlook.
