The podcasters - 4skins

Cynthia Thanda

Podcasts have become increasingly popular in the last four years and the reason is rather obvious.

Wouldn’t you agree that mainstream media stimulates division, sells conflict and therefore isn’t a true representation of the nuanced society we all live in?

The Pan Afrikanist caught up with one of the podcasters of 4skins Podcast, Mike Kumi who passionately shared about their podcasting work.

He mentioned that the whole idea behind their podcast is to introduce the world to interesting people doing interesting things, discussing ideas that stimulate and inspire culture.

4skins Podcast, which is hosted by three guys – Mike Kumi, Baagi Maswabi and Tshimologo Monthe-mainly focuses on Love, Religion, Politics, Culture and Society.

They believe in the art of conversation; providing a warm, non-judgmental space where individuals from all walks of life can share their thoughts, opinions and experiences. Each podcast episode is roughly one hour long, unscripted and unedited.

“Conversation truly is an art and quite honestly we are still learning how to get the best out of every guest we have on the podcast. So far so good. All our guests have been lovely to interact with; humble and respectful”, Mike said.

Mike said that they started the podcasting in November 2020 with the help of the Ambassador of Western Sahara. They would talk for hours about different topics.

Inspired by Joe Rogan and Jordan Peterson, they fantasized about the idea of starting a podcast where they would share their unfiltered views on everything.

The Ambassador was very vocal about the plight of his people and wanted to tell his story. He became their first podcast. They bought equipment they could afford and started with what they have.

“It sometimes feels like a multimillion Pula production due to the logistical nightmare of executing each podcast episode”, Mike commented.

4skins Podcast’s vision is to provide a platform where truth can be spoken and resonated with. They endeavour to challenge every narrative and pull the curtain wide open for society to clearly see itself.

Mike is convinced that we live in a nuanced society, where things are not black and white.

So far they have recorded and filmed 10 podcasts but only released eight (8) of them. 4skins Podcast can be reached on most social media platforms.
