Presidents Paul Kagame and Duma Boko

Gaborone, May 6, 2026 – Botswana and Rwanda have announced reciprocal visa-free travel measures as part of a renewed push to strengthen bilateral ties during Rwandan President Paul Kagame’s two-day State Visit to Botswana.

Speaking at a press briefing after the first day of talks, President Advocate Duma Boko said the engagement was “not a meeting of ceremony, but one of purpose,” underscoring that both nations were committed to turning shared vision into concrete action.

Kagame’s government has removed visa requirements for Batswana, allowing stays of up to six months. Botswana responded immediately with reciprocal measures, easing movement between the two countries.

Boko described the move as a bold gesture of African unity and a practical step toward regional integration.

The talks focused on cooperation in education, health, agriculture, youth empowerment, infrastructure, and connectivity. Boko stressed that both countries are “in a race against time” and must implement agreed priorities with urgency and discipline.

He also highlighted the role of technology and innovation in bridging distance, ensuring that Botswana and Rwanda remain closely connected beyond the visit.

“Together, Botswana and Rwanda are not just strengthening bilateral ties, they are setting an example for Africa and the world,” Boko said.

The Botswana Presidency noted that the visit reflects a partnership built on mutual respect and ambition, with both sides committed to pioneering new paths of collaboration.

President Boko expressed gratitude to Kagame and his delegation, adding that he looked forward to welcoming the Rwandan leader back to experience the Okavango Delta.
