Chinese President Jinping Xi unveils new measures at COP15 for biodiversity

China will take the lead by investing 233 million USD to establish the Kunming Biodiversity Fund. Chinese President Xi Jinping made the announcement while addressing the leaders’ summit of the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity via video link in Beijing on 12th October. The fund will be used to support developing countries in biodiversity protection. President Xi also called the international community to join hands and start a new journey of high-quality development for humanity. The COP15 was held online and offline in Kunming in Southwest China, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and other leaders attended the meeting.

Xi says China will only become more and more open

‘China will not close its door to the world, and it will only become more and more open’, said Chinese President Xi Jinping when delivering a keynote speech via video link at the opening ceremony of the Second United Nations Global Sustainable Transport Conference on 14th October. Facing major changes and a global pandemic unseen in a century, Xi called for following the prevailing trend of world development, advancing global transport cooperation, and writing a new chapter featuring connectivity of infrastructure, unfettered flows of trade and investment, and interactions between civilizations while giving five proposals. Xi also announced that China will set up a Global Innovation and Knowledge Center for Sustainable Transport.

  • China commits to more market access in the Canton Fair

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on 14th October pledged more market access for foreign investors as he opened the 130th session of the China Import and Export Fair, also known as the Canton Fair, in Guangzhou City in South China. Li emphasized that China’s development will always be accompanied by reform and opening-up. The country is willing to share the development opportunities and draw the growth blueprint with the world in achieving greater progress, he added. He also stressed cooperation and inclusiveness against the backdrop of a complex international environment. The fair will be held from 15th to 19th October in Guangzhou. The offline exhibition of the five-day event will cover an area of 400,000 square meters and around 60,000 booths will be set up virtually online.

  • China’s exports in September expand 28.1%

China’s exports in USD terms expanded more than expected in September. The exports in September grew by 28.1% from a year ago to 305.74 billion USD, up from a 25.6% gain in August, according to data released by the General Administration of Customs. September’s gain was higher than Bloomberg’s forecast of 21.5% and that of 21% in a Reuters poll. Experts say that the increase of demand in the global market has benefited China’s exports. In the first nine months of 2021, China’s total imports and exports surged 32.8% year on year to 4.37 trillion USD.

  • China sends another 3 astronauts to its space station

Three Chinese astronauts Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu boarded Shenzhou-13 spacecraft to the core module of China’s space station on 16th October. Among them, Wang will be the first Chinese female astronaut to visit China’s space station. The trio will stay in space for six months, the longest ever in-orbit duration for astronauts. The Shenzhou-13 mission is the second of four manned missions for the construction of China’s space station, Tiangong. China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) said that China welcomes foreign astronauts to its space station to carry out international cooperation.
