Cuba Confirms Talks With U.S. Amid Efforts to Ease Tensions

Havana, March 2026 — Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez has confirmed that officials from Havana and Washington have recently held talks aimed at addressing longstanding differences between the two nations.

Speaking during a meeting with members of the Communist Party’s Political Bureau, the Secretariat of the Central Committee, and the Council of Ministers, Díaz-Canel said the exchanges were conducted “with seriousness and responsibility” and guided by the historic principles of the Cuban Revolution.

According to the president, the discussions sought to identify bilateral issues requiring urgent solutions and to explore areas of cooperation that could benefit both peoples. He emphasised that the talks were not speculative but part of a “sensitive process” designed to reduce confrontation and build understanding.

“The Cuban side has expressed its willingness to carry out this process based on equality and respect for the political systems of both States, as well as for the sovereignty and self-determination of our Government,” Díaz-Canel stated. He added that reciprocity and adherence to international law remain central to Cuba’s approach.

The president noted that international factors have facilitated the exchanges, and that both governments are considering concrete actions to ensure peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean.

While no specific agreements were announced, Díaz-Canel underscored that Cuba will continue to pursue dialogue with the United States in line with its revolutionary tradition, seeking solutions that move the two countries away from confrontation and toward cooperation.
