President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, has rallied his nation against the U.S. blockade

HAVANA, May 6, 2026 – The International Relations Committee of the National Assembly of People’s Power has issued a strong rejection of a new Executive Order by the President of the United States, denouncing it as an escalation of the decades-long economic blockade against Cuba.

The Committee described the measure as an attack on Cuba’s sovereignty and self-determination, warning that it extends punitive sanctions to third parties in an effort to isolate the island further. Cuban representatives also condemned recent U.S. statements that they say heighten military threats against the country.

Reaffirming Cuba’s constitutional commitment to socialism and peace, the Committee highlighted the nation’s adherence to the 2014 Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace. It noted that millions of Cubans had just demonstrated their resolve during Labour Day celebrations, filling streets and squares in defense of national sovereignty.

The statement urged parliamentarians and inter-parliamentary organisations worldwide to denounce the mounting economic and energy siege. It also referenced the International Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba, held in Havana on May 2, where delegates pledged to resist U.S. escalation and amplify support for Cuba during the centennial year of Fidel Castro.
