Eldorado Park residents appeal for government intervention against dangerously polluted river

Residents of Eldorado Park demand accountability for a major environmental disaster that has seen chemically treated sewage flood the Klipriver, a body of water that runs through the heart of their residential area.

On Monday, 27 January 2025, Eldorado Park Ward 17 Councillor Dwain Ponsonby was alerted by members of the community of a terrible stench from the stream of the Klipriver that runs through the community.

On investigation he discovered the shocking sight of the river’s water turning black and the terrible stench from the water due to the toxic discharge.

He immediately called for an investigation by the Gauteng Department of Environment (GDEnv), voicing concerns over the severe potential impact on human health, local wildlife, and downstream agricultural areas that rely on the river for water.

“The residents are furious; they want answers,” said councillor Ponsonby. He emphasised the need for accountability, noting that the situation has severely affected local families.

Meanwhile, GDEnv compliance manager, Percy Rambau stated that the initial report points to human error and vowed that the department will investigate the matter thoroughly.

He said that the department will prepare a report with recommendations for action against those responsible. Ponsonby expressed gratitude for the swift response from the department but urged for accountability.

He warned that the pollution has attracted flies and poses health risks, especially for residents with respiratory problems.

“Somebody needs to be held accountable,” he said, calling upon the GDEnv MEC Shyla Peters to take serious action against the culprits.

The Eldorado Park residents are also suffering from dust and bad smell from the nearby landfill site which they want to be shut down in the interest of protecting human health.
