EU Ambassador to Botswana and SADC, Petra Pereyra had a good meeting with Honourable Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Kenewendo. They briefly discussed the implementation of the EU-funded ASPIRE (Accelerating Sustainable and Productive Investment in Renewable Energy and Efficiency) programme
Gaborone, Botswana – The European Union has unveiled a €5.3 million initiative aimed at accelerating Botswana’s shift towards renewable energy and efficiency.
Known as the Accelerating Sustainable and Productive Investment in Renewable Energy & Efficiency (ASPIRE) programme, the four-year project was launched in Gaborone on February 18, 2026, with technical support from European firms NIRAS (Denmark), Multiconsult (Norway), and Manergy (France).
The programme seeks to strengthen Botswana’s energy institutions, advance regulatory reforms, and create an investment-ready environment for clean energy projects. Officials say ASPIRE will help diversify Botswana’s coal-dependent energy mix, while aligning with the country’s climate commitments under the Paris Agreement.

“ASPIRE is about building the frameworks and capacity that will allow Botswana to attract private investment into renewables and efficiency,” EU Ambassador to Botswana and Special Representative to SADC, Petra Pereyra, noted at the launch.
The initiative is expected to support solar, wind, and efficiency projects, while promoting sustainable economic diversification.

Botswana’s Ministry of Minerals and Energy welcomed the programme, highlighting its role in supporting national policy goals to expand renewable energy’s share of GDP and improve energy security.
Analysts caution, however, that success will depend on overcoming regulatory bottlenecks, grid infrastructure gaps, and ensuring long-term financing beyond EU support.
