‘Garba of Gujarat’ of Gujarat State, India has been inscribed in UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Humanity during the on-going 18th session of the ‘Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage’ which is taking place in Kasane, from 5 to 9 December 2023.
A statement from the High Commission of India says Garba of Gujarat is the 15th cultural item from India to achieve this prestigious recognition.
To mark this historic and special recognition, the High Commission of India in Botswana, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), along with the support of the Department of Culture, Government of Botswana, have joined hands to enthrall the audience with a Garba performance by Niyati Sanskrutik Parivar, a cultural dance troupe from the Gujarat state, India.
The troupe had the honor of performing in Kasane soon after the announcement of the inscription was made on December 6. The troupe will be performing in Francistown on December 7th and in Gaborone on December 8th as follows:
· Francistown: Thursday, 07 December, 2023 at Civic Centre, Blue Jacket Street, Town Centre from 06:30pm to 08:30pm
· Gaborone: Friday, 08 December, 2023 at BAPS Swaminarayan Temple, Block 6, Gaborone from 07:00pm to 8:30pm
