GABORONE, 31 August 2026 — The diplomatic community in Botswana is mourning the death of His Excellency Sidihiba Abbes Abdala, Ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic to Botswana and Permanent Representative to the Southern African Development Community (SADC), who passed away on Sunday, 30 August, at Bokamoso Private Hospital in Gaborone.
The Ministry of International Relations announced his death on Monday, describing him as a seasoned diplomat who played an instrumental role in strengthening relations and cooperation between Botswana and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
Ambassador Abdala began his tour of duty in Botswana in January 2026. Before his posting to Gaborone, he served his country in various diplomatic capacities at Sahrawi missions in Germany, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, Sweden and India. For some who encountered him during his brief tenure in Botswana, however, Ambassador Abdala’s legacy extends beyond his diplomatic responsibilities.
A warm welcome that became a lasting memory
I met Ambassador Abdala on 18 April 2026, when His Excellency welcomed me at the Embassy of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic in Gaborone. He greeted me with a smile and the words, “How are you, daughter of Sahrawi?”
It was a simple greeting, but it immediately put a smile on my face and made me feel at home. During our meeting, His Excellency spoke warmly about my work, sharing stories he had heard about me from previous Ambassadors and expressing his eagerness to work with me. His words of assurance and motivation came at a time when I needed them greatly.
He did not simply speak about diplomacy. He took a personal interest in my aspirations, encouraging me as I shared some of my fears and dreams with him.
That afternoon, he served me a delicious Sahrawi lunch. I left the Embassy promising that I would return.
I never imagined that our time together would be so short. To me, Ambassador Abdala was more than an ambassador. He became a father figure and mentor. The few encounters I had with him carried a warmth that made me feel as though we were part of one family.
His encouragement, particularly when I spoke about my uncertainties and aspirations, is something I will carry with me. His passing is therefore not only the loss of a diplomat who served his country with distinction, but also the loss of a man whose kindness and personal warmth touched those around him during his short time in Botswana.
The Government and people of Botswana have extended their heartfelt sympathies and deepest condolences to the Government and people of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.
For those who knew him personally, Ambassador Abdala will be remembered not only for the office he held, but for the humanity he brought to it.
May his soul rest in eternal peace
