Lavrov holds talks with Rubio

Kuala Lumpur, July 10, 2025 — In a notable diplomatic exchange during the annual ASEAN ministerial events, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met to discuss pressing issues on the global stage.

The meeting followed up on commitments made by Presidents Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden during a recent call on July 3, reflecting efforts to restore and recalibrate bilateral relations.

Global Hotspots Under Discussion

The ministers engaged in a “substantive and frank” dialogue addressing the war in Ukraine, tensions in Iran and Syria, and other complex international challenges. Both sides reaffirmed the importance of seeking peaceful solutions through diplomatic channels and pledged to work towards easing global tensions.

Renewing Connections Between Societies

Among the practical steps considered was the potential resumption of direct flights between Russia and the United States—a move aimed at revitalizing humanitarian and economic exchange. Lavrov and Rubio also underscored the need for improved cooperation between their societies and diplomatic missions.

A Path Forward

The two ministers agreed to maintain constructive dialogue based on mutual respect and shared interests. With the global landscape growing increasingly complex, this rare high-level engagement signals cautious optimism for warmer ties and joint action on key world issues.
