Reaching for the African skies: Tumisang Shamil Agosi

Pan Afrikanist Watchman

Not only is Tumisang ‘Shamil’ Agosi a trendsetter, but also a fashion-savvy business entrepreneur with a passion for the welfare of Africa’s youth.

She wears many hats. Tumisang is the Founder and Regional Chair for African Union Youth Club (AUYC) in Southern Africa.

She is also Southern Africa ANTI CORRUPTION Youth Ambassador, Consultant with BroadImpact as well as Botswana National Coordinator for Maestros International.

This young lady is an Entrepreneur, an Image consultant of note and a passionate Youth Activist.

Tumisang otherwise known as “SHAMIL” has a proven track record of successful youth development and leadership skills that accorded most youth the opportunity to work with International Organisations such as the African Union, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), SADC as well as other National Organisations such as Botswana Exporters and Manufacturers Association (BEMA) among the many.

She is currently leading a 16 member SADC delegation of pragmatic youth leaders in advocating for ratification and implementation of African Youth Charter and is also driving the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Africa’s Agenda 2063.

Tumisang has worked with the African Advisory Board in hosting dialogues on Pan-Africanism and Agenda 2063.

She and her team recently facilitated a conference in Gaborone on Botswana’s accession to the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) to specifically discuss issues of gender mainstreaming.

Tumisang has successfully hosted public lectures, dialogues and public debates on Youth participation in the fight against corruption, African Youth Charter, SDGs and Agenda 2063 and in the process caught the attention of both local and international media.

Tumisang is in a quest to create a perfect platform to inform people at grassroots level about issues of both National and Continental interest.

She has developed concept papers on Youth entrepreneurship development, which were adopted by the AUSARO and some on Infrastructure development and youth Empowerment, which were adopted by SADC as well as on Youth and the Business of Football, which were adopted by the Caribbean and were hosted December 31st 2020 in Jamaica.

She has been featured in Africa Talks, DG Trends speaking on youth initiatives in the fight against corruption.

Shamil was invited as the only youth and Motswana who attended the International Anti-Corruption Conference in Denmark, representing youth against corruption in the region.

Tumisang was part of the committee that developed the national implementation plan for SDG4 in Botswana, contributing to ensuring equitable and inclusive education and lifelong learning for all.

She also delivered key messages to the ministers of water and energy representing the youth,

She was a speaker and moderator at the annual Southern Africa Broadcasting Association (SABA) AGM and Conference in Cape Town and she also spoke alongside Prof Adebayo Olokushi and Swiss Ambassador at the ADS Policy Dialogue in Mozambique.

Tumisang facilitated youth participation in all SADC high level meetings and is part of several thematic groups in SADC.

Shamil was also invited as a speaker and moderator at the Southern Africa Internet Governance forum held in Durban under the theme, ‘inclusive and secure internet’ and spoke on the transformative effects of women and youths as agents of change through technological innovation.

As part of her passion she created a whistleblower application that unveils grand and petty corruption.

Tumisang who is quoted alongside Paul Holmes in the book ‘The Global PR Revolution’ by Maxim Behar continues to play an integral role in inspiring youth of Africa to be custodians of their own development as well as engaging them in meaningful and equitable partnerships in driving Africa’s Development Agenda.

This young go-getter has dared to break many barriers, stereotypes and glass-ceilings on her way to becoming board member of Professor Patrick Loch Otieno (PLO) Lumumba Foundation
