Moscow, April 29, 2026 – Russian President Vladimir Putin and President of the Republic of the Congo Denis Sassou Nguesso held high-level talks at the Kremlin, reaffirming a bilateral relationship that dates back more than four decades.

Putin recalled that the first treaty between the two nations was signed in 1981, laying the foundation for what he described as “friendly, full-fledged and good relations” between Russia (then the USSR) and Congo.

He congratulated Sassou Nguesso on his recent election victory, noting the significance of Congo’s leader choosing Moscow as his first foreign destination following his inauguration.

The discussions highlighted broad areas of cooperation, including geological exploration, energy, logistics, agriculture, and humanitarian exchange. Putin emphasized Russia’s readiness to expand its economic footprint in Congo, citing the country’s political stability as a key factor in attracting investment.

Human capital development remains central to the partnership. Over the years, Russia has trained more than 8,000 Congolese specialists, with 850 students currently enrolled in Russian institutions.

A new joint action plan in the economic sphere is expected to be signed during Sassou Nguesso’s visit.

The talks also carried a strong international dimension. Putin expressed appreciation for Congo’s active participation in previous Russia–Africa Summits and extended an invitation for Sassou Nguesso to attend the Third Russia–Africa Summit, scheduled for autumn 2026 in Moscow.

Background: Russia–Congo Relations

Russia and the Republic of the Congo have maintained steady diplomatic ties since the early 1980s, with cooperation spanning energy, mining, education, and security. The relationship has been marked by Russia’s role in training Congolese professionals and supporting infrastructure projects.

Congo’s Political Context

Denis Sassou Nguesso, one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, secured victory in Congo’s recent elections, reinforcing his position at the helm of the country. His visit to Moscow underscores the importance he places on Russia as a strategic partner in Congo’s development agenda.

Looking Ahead

Sassou Nguesso’s programme in Russia includes meetings at the Federation Council and a visit to St. Petersburg. Both leaders expressed confidence that the trip would deepen bilateral ties.

They set the stage for stronger collaboration at the upcoming Russia–Africa Summit, where economic diversification, energy cooperation, and digital transformation are expected to dominate discussions.
