MOSCOW – Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump are expected to meet in the coming days following a high-level discussion in Moscow aimed at advancing efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis.

The announcement was made by Yury Ushakov, Aide to the President of Russia, who described the August 6 meeting between Putin and U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff as “constructive” and “business-like.”

Ushakov confirmed that both sides reached a principled agreement to hold a bilateral summit, with preparations already underway and the venue agreed upon.

“The discussion focused on future efforts to work together in the context of resolving the Ukraine crisis,” Ushakov said. “Russia-U.S. relations could be placed on a totally different, mutually beneficial footing, in stark contrast with recent years.”

While speculation emerged in Washington about a possible trilateral meeting involving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ushakov clarified that the idea was merely mentioned by the U.S. envoy and not formally discussed.

“Russia has not commented on this option in any way,” he said, emphasizing that Moscow’s priority is preparing for a bilateral meeting with Trump.

The summit would mark the first face-to-face engagement between the two leaders since Trump took office in January. It also comes amid growing pressure from the U.S. administration for Russia to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Trump has reportedly spoken with several European leaders following Witkoff’s briefing and has signalled urgency in pushing forward peace negotiations.

Next week has been floated as a possible timeframe for the summit, though Ushakov cautioned that preparations are still in early stages.

“It is hard to say how long the preparations will take,” he said, adding that Russia views the proposed timing positively.

The Kremlin has been updating its allies through diplomatic channels, while Trump has reportedly tasked his national security team with preparing for both bilateral and potential trilateral meetings.

As the war in Ukraine enters its fourth year, the proposed summit could represent a turning point in diplomatic efforts.

However, analysts warn that without concrete concessions, the talks may serve more as symbolic gestures than substantive breakthroughs.
