Gaborone — The University of Botswana (UB) has dismissed as misleading and unfounded social media claims alleging police brutality during a law enforcement operation at its student residences.
On 17 August 2026, Botswana Police Service (BPS) officers, acting on intelligence linked to the possession and sale of illicit substances, conducted targeted searches in collaboration with UB Protection Services. The operation followed the arrest of an external suspect who implicated individuals allegedly operating within student hostels.
Authorities reported the discovery of suspected cannabis and drug‑infused baked goods in student rooms. Several arrests were made, disciplinary dockets opened, and unauthorised occupants identified.
UB stressed that the intervention was lawful, procedural, and aimed at safeguarding students from illegal activities that threaten campus security. The institution rejected allegations of indiscriminate assault, saying such claims unfairly impugn both the police and university administration.
“The welfare of students cannot be used as a shield for illicit operations or illegal residency,” UB said, reaffirming its zero‑tolerance policy on drug trafficking and unauthorised occupancy.
The university urged the public and media to rely on verified facts and avoid amplifying uncorroborated reports that undermine institutional safety and public order.
