Botswana’s Space Ambitions and India’s Journey: A Partnership Whose Time Has Come

As Botswana charts an ambitious course towards establishing its own space capabilities and building indigenous satellites, there is much to learn from countries that have transformed bold aspirations into tangible achievements.

Few examples are more compelling than India’s remarkable journey—from launching small sounding rockets in the 1960s to becoming one of the world’s leading spacefaring nations, and now witnessing the emergence of a vibrant private space industry.

Botswana’s interest in space technology is timely and strategic. For a country with a vast landmass, dispersed population and an economy increasingly driven by innovation, satellite technology is no longer a luxury. It is an essential tool for economic development.

Earth observation satellites can support precision agriculture, monitor water resources, improve mineral exploration, track wildlife and combat poaching. Satellite imagery can assist urban planning, disaster management and climate resilience, while communications satellites can help bridge the digital divide by connecting remote communities.

The question, therefore, is no longer whether Botswana should invest in space technology, but how it can build sustainable capabilities that serve national development.

India’s experience offers valuable lessons.

When India established its space programme over six decades ago, it was neither wealthy nor technologically advanced. The vision of pioneers such as Dr Vikram Sarabhai was simple yet profound: space technology must directly improve the lives of ordinary citizens.

This philosophy continues to guide the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), whose satellites today support weather forecasting, telemedicine, distance education, fisheries, navigation, agriculture and disaster management for over 1.4 billion people.

The achievements that followed have become milestones in global space history. India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) earned worldwide recognition for its reliability and cost-effectiveness, launching hundreds of satellites for customers across the globe.

Chandrayaan-1 confirmed the presence of water molecules on the Moon. The Mars Orbiter Mission reached Mars in its very first attempt, making India the first nation to achieve this feat on its maiden mission. Chandrayaan-3 became the first spacecraft to soft-land near the Moon’s south pole, opening new frontiers for lunar exploration.

India is now preparing for human spaceflight under the Gaganyaan programme while simultaneously expanding scientific exploration through missions such as Aditya-L1, its solar observatory.

Yet perhaps the most significant development has occurred much closer to home—in the country’s policy framework.

Recognising that the future space economy will be driven by innovation and entrepreneurship, India opened its space sector to private participation in 2020. Start-ups were encouraged to design launch vehicles, build satellites and develop downstream applications while working alongside ISRO.

That policy has already begun to bear fruit.

In July, Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, becoming the first Indian private company to place payloads into orbit using an indigenously developed orbital launch vehicle.

The achievement is historic not merely because another rocket reached space, but because it demonstrates the strength of an ecosystem where government institutions, universities, research laboratories and private enterprise complement one another.

India’s space story has evolved from being exclusively government-led to one powered by both public investment and private innovation.

For Botswana, this carries important lessons.

Building a national space programme does not necessarily begin with launch vehicles or billion-dollar investments. It begins with developing human capital, creating institutions, encouraging universities to undertake space research, nurturing start-ups and investing in satellite applications that address national priorities.

Botswana already possesses many of these building blocks. It has political stability, sound governance, an expanding digital economy and growing interest in science, technology and innovation.

By developing expertise in satellite engineering, remote sensing, geospatial analytics and space applications, Botswana can gradually establish itself as an important participant in Africa’s growing space ecosystem.

India stands ready to be a partner in that journey.

Over the years, India has consistently shared its space capabilities with developing countries through satellite launches, capacity-building programmes and technical cooperation.

Indian launch vehicles have deployed satellites for numerous countries at affordable costs, while Indian institutions have trained engineers, scientists and policymakers from across the Global South. The emphasis has always been on building local capabilities rather than dependence.

This aligns closely with the aspirations of Botswana and the broader African continent. The African Space Agency has begun its work, while an increasing number of African nations are investing in satellites to support development objectives. Botswana has an opportunity to become an active contributor to this continental momentum.

The growing India-Botswana partnership already encompasses education, healthcare, digital technology, capacity building and renewable energy. Space technology offers a natural extension of this cooperation.

Joint research, training programmes, scholarships, satellite development, remote sensing applications and commercial partnerships between Indian and Botswana companies could open new avenues of collaboration that deliver practical benefits to both countries.

Ultimately, the value of a space programme should not be measured by the number of rockets launched but by the lives improved on the ground. Whether it enables farmers to manage crops more efficiently, conservationists to protect wildlife, governments to respond to disasters faster or students to pursue careers in science and engineering, space technology is fundamentally about solving terrestrial challenges.

India’s journey demonstrates that visionary leadership, sustained investment in science and technology, and a collaborative ecosystem can transform an ambitious dream into a globally respected capability.

The recent success of Skyroot Aerospace’s private orbital launch is not simply another milestone for India; it is evidence that the future of space belongs to countries that embrace innovation, empower entrepreneurs and invest in talent.

As Botswana looks to the skies, India offers not just inspiration, but a willing partner. Together, the two countries can ensure that space becomes not the preserve of a few advanced nations, but a powerful instrument for sustainable development, innovation and shared prosperity.
