GABORONE, 8 May 2026 — Botswana’s third President, Festus Gontebanye Mogae, passed away Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. after a long illness. He was 87.

President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko announced the news on national television at noon, describing Mogae as “a great statesman and a principled leader” who served the nation with dignity, humility, and diligence.

Mogae, who succeeded Sir Ketumile Masire in 1998, was the first to complete two mandatory five-year terms. His tenure is widely remembered for decisive leadership during the HIV/AIDS epidemic, introducing free anti-retroviral therapy — a pioneering move that continues to benefit citizens and foreign nationals alike.

A trained economist educated at Oxford and Sussex, Mogae rose through Botswana’s civil service as Governor of the Bank of Botswana, Permanent Secretary to the President, and Minister of Finance and Development Planning before assuming the presidency.

Born in Serowe, Mogae maintained economic stability while advancing Botswana’s role in global initiatives, including the Kimberley Process on conflict diamonds. His presidency from 1998 to 2008 was marked by relative calm and prosperity, though not without public protests over land disputes in Mogoditshane.

In recognition of his leadership, Mogae became the first Botswana President to receive the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership.

President Boko has declared a three-day national mourning period, with flags flying at half-mast. Condolences have poured in from political parties, the diplomatic community, and international partners.

The Russian Federation’s embassy in Gaborone praised Mogae as “a distinguished statesman whose visionary leadership steered Botswana through a period of remarkable economic stability and growth,” noting his role in strengthening ties between Russia and Botswana.

Mogae is survived by his wife, former First Lady Mma Nametso, and their family.
